So you're new to New Mexico State University!

First let me congratulate you on your acceptance to one of the nation's best schools. New Mexico State has some great opportunities and fun times ahead for your college experience. With the popular Taos Restaurant a favorite place to hang out or study for students and a sport program that the locals take pride in, you're sure to find NMSU an all around exciting atmosphere.

With a student body that exceeds over 16,000, you're sure to make new friends on a campus that is over 6,000 acres. The main hang out for the students, or even just some locals and alumni, is the Corbett Center. A computer lab that students can use for fun or study attached to a joined pool room where students can play for a dollar an hour, the Corbett Center is sure fun. The two-level building has computers all over for student access and a food court with several different restaurants. The most popular being the Taos Restaurant.

The Taos Restaurant offers a variety of foods from local Mexican food to Italian and Chinese. It has a snack bar that you can snatch a couple of brownies for the road, or snack while you study. Another thing that makes it so popular with the student body is the fact that it takes the meal program from the university as payment, as well as cash, credit and debit cards.

After you've dined at the Taos, you could take a walk to one of the local ponds that makes our campus so beautiful. This school's main pond, just beyond Garcia Hall, is also a popular reading, study and hang out area. Students who like to get away from all the noise, get back to nature without going off campus, or enjoy a great view come here. You can also see most of the campus from the pond.

From the pond, you can take a trip back to the Corbett Center to view the art gallery with the pieces from the local art programs. Or maybe if art isn't you're thing, you can check out the latest collection at the Zuhl Museum located in front of the business building right on University Ave. There, collection ranges from local geological finds to cultural-themed exhibits. El Dia De Los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a highly attended exhibit during October.

For the times you need to study and cram, the Zuhl and Branson libraries offers an extensive catalog of books, newspaper clipping and articles for every field of study. While the Zuhl library focuses more on the scientific and geological side of literature, Branson has the stuff on law, literature, and fiction. Each with it's own computer lab with internet access, it also offers wireless internet for those student who prefer to use their own laptops to get their work completed. New Mexico State libraries are the easiest places to find information on any subject you can think of.

As for all the places you can go hang out, make new friends and have a good time; there are places you do want to try to avoid. The first and foremost is the parking lots at night. Granted NMSU has some of the best police officers and safest campuses in the United States, parking lots after dark tend to become the meeting place for those drug induced students who you probably want to stay away from. There is also not a lot of lighting in the lots at night, so moving cars might not see you while you walk to your dorm. So be careful. The Horse Shoe is one of the darkest areas at night; so if you have a late class or need to enter one of the buildings located on the street, try to stay in the lighted areas. It's only common sense to not be alone in a dark place late at night. Other than those,NMSU has a stable and reliable security that is always on patrol to help keep you safe.

Another thing for students of legal drinking age can take advantage of is the taxi service. Free of charge, the taxi's pick up students who have been drinking to help keep them from ruining their lives with DUI and killing themselves or anybody else. Last but not least, The NMSU Aggies are Las Cruces's pride and joy. Football seasons in the fall, and basketball season in the spring, there is always a game going on. Before every home game, tail gating parties are a must for any Aggies, new or old. A few hours pre-game, hundreds of locals and fans barbeque and rile themselves up for the up coming game. During basketball season, the Pan American Center is the place to be. Our basketball team is one of the best in the country, even making it to the March madness this year. They have also won 2 of the last 4 WAC tournaments. So, wear your crimson colors with pride!

As you start your journey at NMSU, please keep all these things in mind when deciding what you should do when you're bored or need to study. If you're hungry, try one of the restaurants located in the Corbett Center. Bored? Try taking a walk around the pond or attending a gallery at one of the museums.
